Tekken it out and about...
So, now we’re getting Tekken 6 on the PSP. Bandying this information about the place seems to elicit shrugs of disinterest or a scowl of contempt, but it really shouldn’t. Perhaps it’s just the jaded nature of the office. Bad us. Either way, September will see the release of a flurry of Tekken 6 games across multiple formats, all of which we suspect will be brilliant.

The last version, Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection came to the PSP and did a great job of showing what a one-on-one fighter could be. Sure, there were a few control issues, but, hey, what do you expect? What’s really exciting is that the nature of the genre means that the PSP version won’t lose out on any of the facets of the home console versions. Yes, visually, it’s going to be inferior, and if you’re playing on your gigantic HDTV via your TV-out cable, you’re going to notice a difference. On the smaller screen, you’re not going to care though, are you? In fact, what you’re likely to get is an enhanced version if anything. Namco has promised PSP-exclusive stages, new content, new items and the return of the ghost system enabling you to set your fighting style against others in a CPU-controlled battle.
In honesty, this is all beside the point. What you’ll get with Tekken 6 on the PSP is as much of a game as the home-console version. Every move, every frame of animation and every character will be included. That’s guaranteed. This isn’t some marketing rhetoric or PR noise, but a simple statement of fact. Being an instant frame system, Tekken 6 couldn’t manage with reduced moves, or frames of animation, as the balance would be changed, requiring tweaking, fiddling and testing, essentially undoing years of playtesting and arcade feedback.
Final Summary
This version of Tekken will have every bit as much gameplay punch as any other.
